"Coppélia (French: Coppélia), full title Coppélia or the Girl with the Enamel Eyes, is a comic ballet with an original libretto based on the short story by E. Т. А. Hoffmann, written by Charles Neuter and Arthur Saint-Léon, who also created the first choreography. The plot tells the story of Franz's love for Copelia, the unknown girl who every morning goes out on the balcony in the house of the strange Doctor Copelius. The girl is actually a human-sized mechanical doll that can move and dance. The doctor plots to take the boy's soul through magic to turn Copelius into a living being, but Franz's fiancée, Svanilda, and her friends, manage to thwart his diabolical plan. The premiere performances are dedicated to the 125th anniversary of the birth of Anastas Petrov, the first creator of Bulgarian ballet. "Coppelia" and 60 years of the great Italian artist Salvatore Russo, 25 years of which are on the Bulgarian opera and ballet stage.
