NABUCO at Beroe Stadium in the 2025 anniversary of the Stara Zagora Opera
On 5 July at 21.00 at Beroe Stadium the Stara Zagora Opera will present a spectacular performance of one of the most beloved and popular operas by Giuseppe Verdi , Nabucco. In the jubilee program dedicated to the centenary of the Stara Zagora Opera, Nabucco is the exciting choice of the creators of the landmark "Opera at the Stadium" - an initiative that arose on the occasion of the centenary of the football club "Beroe" in 2016 and outlined the new summer destination of the cultural life of Stara Zagora. Over the years, the Beroe Stadium has become the opera arena of Stara Zagora, on the stage of which were presented the performances of the operas "Aida" /2016 and 2021/, "Carmen" with Veselina Katsarova /2017/, "Nabucco" with Maria Gulegina /2018/, "Troubadour" /2019/.
The super production of the opera Nabucco, which will be presented on July 5, is being prepared especially for the festive edition of Opera at the Stadium. The performance will be conducted by Vladimir Boshnakov, directed by Ognyan Draganov. The scenography has been prepared and adapted by Todor Demerov. Conductor of the choir Mladen Stanev.
A star soloist ensemble will delight opera lovers with their performances. The role of Abigail will be performed by the magnificent soprano Ioana Zhelezcheva, whom the Stara Zagora audience knows from her brilliant performances as Aida /Opera at the 2021 Stadium/ and as Amelia from The Masque Ball. In the role of Nabucco she will be partnered by the renowned Romanian baritone Ionuc Pascu, who is beloved and repeatedly acclaimed on the Stara Zagora stage in the performances of the opera Il Trovatore, in Nabucco at the Beroe Stadium with Maria Gulegina, as well as in the premiere performance of the opera Masque Ball. Ionuc Pascu has a respectable biography with permanent engagements in addition to the Bucharest Opera and opera theatres and festivals in Romania, the Tel Aviv Opera in Israel, opera houses in Salerno, Padua, Liege, Valencia, and tours in the Netherlands and South Korea. The magnificent soloists of State Opera Stara Zagora Ivaylo Djurov, Daniela Dyakova, Ivaylo Yovchev will perform in the three main roles of Zachariah, Fenena and Ishmael. Ignat Zhelev will be the High Priest, Stoyan Buyukliev will be Abdalo and Elena Petrova will be Anna. The orchestra and choir of the State Opera-Stara Zagora, the choir of the State Opera-Burgas, representatives of the Pre-Bulgarian Survival School "BagaTur" will take part.
The opera Nabucco is the third opera of Giuseppe Verdi's early work, but it was a triumphant success with its first performance in 1842 at the Milanese Scala. The plot, inspired by the biblical epic, is filled with the pathos of freedom.
The Stara Zagora Opera Theatre presented the unfading work by the great Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi for the first time outside the capital on May 17, 1967, with conductor Veselin Nenov, director Stoyan Velev and artist Peter Ruskov, chorus conductor Bogdana Popova. Since then Nabucco has hardly left the repertoire of the State Opera - Stara Zagora. It was followed by productions in 1982, 1995, 1997, 2001 and 2011. The performances enjoy unchanging interest at home and abroad. In the spring of 2011, the opera Nabucco was performed 25 times before demanding audiences in Belgium and the Netherlands.
